Question of the Day

If you grew up in the '70's, you probably have heard of all three of the legends who left the earth last week, Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson. I was a child during that time and I remember trying to imitate Farrah's hairstyle while enjoying the music of Michael. The memories I have of Ed McMahon reach back to when he advertised for the Publisher's Clearinghouse Sweepstakes, way before you could enter online. I can't tell you how many of those entries I filled out, hoping to see Ed at my door. Then, if I stayed up really late, I could hear that familiar voice introduce "Heeeere's Johnny!"

While all three of these celebrity icons were very different, they were very much the same in that they made an impression. Not just on me, but on us, those who found them to be entertaining and familiar.

Now onto the Question of the Day.....Can you reach back into your past and think of someone who influenced you? Maybe it was a celebrity, maybe a favorite grandmother, maybe a stranger who made you smile on an otherwise dreary day. Think back....and feel free to share a comment.

Question of the Day

The Glass Ceiling. Have you felt it? Have you felt it's strength as it looms above you in your own careers?

This year, we have a chance to break through that glass ceiling. Back at the beginning of 2008, I thought that Senator Hillary Clinton would be the one to do it. Now we have Gov. Sarah Palin, and I can almost hear that ceiling cracking.

Now, while I don't believe in voting for a candidate based on gender, race, etc., I do believe that there are times when history is made. This could be one of those times. And, if it doesn't happen this year, then I feel that women at least have made great strides toward filling the positions of the highest offices in the land. No matter what party affiliation you are, that's commendable.

Have you got a 'glass ceiling breaking' story to share? Something that can inspire women to move forward? If so, this may be your time to tell it.

Question of the Day

Why do women write?

Do you feel like I do? I believe that we, as women, write because there are so many things that weigh upon our hearts. We write about the deepest, darkest times; we write about the happy joy-filled times. We write when we're sad and happy. We write when we're angry or afraid. We write when we're pleased or excited.

As a poet, I write about the feelings in my heart and the hearts of my 'characters'.

As a novelist, I write about people I've dreamed up or observed.

As a short story writer, I write about contained situations.

As a non-fiction writer, I write what I observe or research.

This is why I write.

Women, why do you write?

Question of the Day

Do we really want a woman in the White House?

Answer me this....if we really want a woman in the White House, as President of the United States, why hasn't it happened yet? It's been many years since women won the right to vote. It's been many years since the Women's Liberation Movement. Yet, it seems so difficult to break through that 'glass ceiling' on the road to Washington.

Could it be that while we, as women, are supportive of a woman president we just don't want it to be us? Do we feel that we do not have enough qualified women to run, or women willing to run? Or, do we, as women, feel that our country isn't ready for such a change?

Think on these things.....and let the world know how you feel.
